My name is Lisa Conway I have been a hairdresser for over 30 years and even though I don't cut or color anymore (well, just the dog), I am still a hairdresser to my core. I love the Hair and Beauty industry and the talented individuals that i meet every day.

But, it wasn't always easy, like you I made all the mistakes...

I opened my own salon because I kept thinking;"Hang on a minute, I’m doing all the clients, I’m working my ass off and the boss has all the choices. Why does he have all the holidays and the tight ass won’t even let me have one Saturday off, that’s just not fair! I can do it better than him, that’s it, I’m going to start my own salon, I want to be the boss, make all the decisions”! 

How hard can it be RIGHT?

WRONG!

Boy was I wrong, running a hair salon is 50 shades of hard.
I had no idea how hard and because I have way too much pride, I used to lie about it. I would pretend it was all good, “how’s business Lisa”? my Dad would ask, “great, we are killing it”, when the truth was, it was killing me…

My creative side was slipping away, and I was working my 12 hours a day a week to cover the wages. You employ people to help you? RIGHT!! 

For the most part, all you are really doing is helping them. 

When you finally get that elusive Saturday off, forget that fairy tale you told yourself pre-salon owner days, instead someone calls in sick and who rushes in to do their clients? Yes, you guessed right - ME.

I remember thinking who signed me up for this, because that not how I imagined it would be.
Paying everyone’s wages, taxes, retirement funds before mine and then going home to 3 kids at the end of the day to do the cooking and care for them, I quickly realized that I had given birth to another baby (my salon) only this baby never got any older it was like a newborn that always needed a bottle and a nappy change!

How was I ever going to get out of this position, I wasn’t happy in my marriage and I knew if I was going to be single again after 20 years of being in a relationship it was time to grow up and take responsibility for my action or I’m my case lack of financial actions.

I never wanted to know about the back end of the business, I just wanted to be with my clients make them happy, and I was good at. But when the team leaves and you are left sweeping the floor late at night you start thinking, “everyone else gets to go home and switch off, except for the salon owner”. I kept telling myself that it was just part of what I signed up for…

WELL, BOY I WAS WRONG!

I remember it like it was yesterday, It was a Sunday afternoon and I spent three hours cleaning the salon, scrubbing down the skirting boards, filling up the shampoo bottles at the basin and making sure that when we opened tomorrow the team had everything they wanted and my husband rode past with our three kids on their bikes and I thought this is crap, I need to get this noose from around my neck. After all, when did I become Cinderella??

There has to be a better way and I need to start owning my shit! 

I had to be brave and admit to myself; “no-one ever taught me the business smarts and I didn’t think it was important, its now time to make this a priority”.

That is when I began transformation from a burned-out hairdresser to a successful salon owner. In my book THE NAKED SALON, I will tell you what I did next that started me on the journey to becoming a leader and I did it on my terms, working hard is bullshit, working smart is your way out.
